A rare and exciting arrival! 🦛💕 On August 2, 2026, the Toronto Zoo welcomed a healthy female pygmy hippopotamus calf to the world named Maple. Her mother, Kindia, was in active labor for approximately 1½ hours before giving birth. Maple amazed keepers by attempting to stand within 15 minutes and successfully nursing about 4½ hours later, both excellent signs of a healthy calf. This is Kindia's third calf and an important milestone for the conservation of pygmy hippos, a species classified as Endangered, with only an estimated 2,000–3,000 remaining in the wild. Maple is continuing to bond with her mother behind the scenes Every pygmy hippo birth is a significant step toward helping protect this incredible species for future generations. 🖤
